Chapter 8 SECONDARY STORAGE
Data Storage
Anything with information recorded on it.
It has 2 types of data storage
- primary storage
- secondary storage
This week, I would to share with you about secondary storage....
What is external memory? auxiliary storage?
Sometimes, secondary storage also referred to as external memory and auxiliary storage.
Secondary storage is a storage medium that holds/store information until it is deleted even if electrical power is not available.
As you can see the above picture, there are three different storage on a computer.
Even though, primary storage can be accessed much faster than secondary storage but it is used with today's computer to store all your programs and personal data.
Now, I would like to talk about the types of secondary storage...
1. Compact disc, recordable (CD-R), rewritable (CD-RW), DVD
~ it is low cost, portable, long live, unlimited capacity with multiple disc
~ but, it is limited capacity to one disc and slow moderate read/write speed
~ use in data distribution, data archiving, data migration, and offline storage
|
2. Diskettes
~ not very popular today
~ it is simple to use, portable and can be formatted
~ but, it is limited capacity, slow moderate read/write speed
~ it used in local data transfer of small files and storage of small files or program
3. Hard drive, external
~ it can be moved among computer and high speed in write/read
~ limited capacity and it is awkward for data transfer among multiple computer
~ use in local backup and local archiving
4. Hard drive, internal
~ high read/write speed, use with single computer but can be shared with
multiple computer, most common form of data storage
~ limited capacity and without special support confined to a single computer or
server
